CAN THE SPIRIT OF OLD ANDY CARNEGIE GUIDE US TODAY?
The example of Andrew Carnegie and his powerful Gospel of Wealth come to mind
as guide and inspiration for us today as we address myriad social issues -- and especially the
rebuilding of our American communities, urban, suburban and rural. He was a powerful example of
the Spirit of America at work, helping to build this great nation in the early years of the last
century. Can we today, stewards of the American Spirit of "Can-do," apply our individual and
collective wealth to address social and economic justice issues?

The region we fondly call Long Island ("LI," that is) has become a virtual alphabetsoupland of organizations and regional initiatives. And over the past half-century, Long Island Business News (LIBN, that is) and its predecessors have been at the dawn of creation of many of these important initialized and acronym-ized entities. Some organizations have ultimately enjoyed long life and can honestly take credit for significant accomplishments.

FUTURE OF INDEPENDENT RESEARCH -- GLOBAL SETTLEMENT (SPITZER-TOP 10 FIRMS) EFFECTIVE JULY 26 - AND NOW WHAT FOR BROKERAGE CUSTOMERS-INVESTORS?
When New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer settled charges with the Big 10 Wall Street investment
banking / full-service brokerage firms, after the AG attacked the firms' faulty or allegedly
misleading research reports (no guilt was admitted), it was agreed that [as part of the historic
settlement] the banking-brokerage firms would make available to their customers "independent
research." This would be purchased from qualified third parties that had no compensation coming
to the firm from investment banking or brokerage businesses. The plan was to be put in action by

IRRC REPORTS ON PEAK OF 2004 PROXY SEASON SHAREHOLDER RESOLUTIONS - THE MIDYEAR SCORECARD
The Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC) is now reporting on the
peak season activities (for proxy season 2004). IRRC has issued its midyear recap and companies
scorecard. Some proxy contests will stretch out to year-end, but most occurred in spring months. Four
major issue areas for shareholders are tracked by IRRC: Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Corporate "Sustainability"
