"Shifty" attributed to the great pilot, Chuck Yeager. Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them. Read on...(more). THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA May 29, 2009 THE BOYS OF IWO JIMA (FROM THE BOOK: HEART TOUCHERS "LIFE-CHANGING STORIES OF FAITH, LOVE, AND LAUGHTER) Each year my video production company is hired to go to Washington, D.C. with the eighth grade class from Clinton, Wisconsin where I grew up, to videotape their trip. I greatly enjoy visiting our nation's capitol, and each year I take some special memories back with me. This fall's trip was especially memorable. Read on...(more). And the proud symbol of Naval Aviation is the Blue Angels flying team. The Blue Angels thrill millions every year with their dramatic air shows featuring carefully choreographed maneuvers. Today the team flies at 66 air shows at 35 air show sites in the USA, flying the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet. Read on...(more). THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA June 12, 2008 "Battle Hymn of the Republic" Like You've Never Heard it Before The text of the well-known "Battle Hymn of the Republic" was created at the Willard Hotel in Washington DC in November 1861, in the first year of the terrible War Between the State (our Civil War) by Julia Ward Howell. The words, assembled in one night. were published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The music was written a few years earlier. Mrs. Howe was an ardent anti-slavery activist (wife of Samuel Gridley Howe, a scholar). Read on...(more). THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA January 25, 2007 post GOD BLESS AMERICA - ROCK ART I'm told that there is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Hwy.25 in rural Iowa. For generations, kids have painted slogans, names, and obscenities on this rock, changing its character many times. A few months back, the rock received its latest paint job, and since then it has been left completely undisturbed. It's quite an impressive sight. Be sure to scroll down and check out the multiple photos (all angles) of the rock. I thought the flag was draped over the rock, but it's not. It's actually painted on the rock too. Read on...(more). THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA December 11, 2006 post FREE OFFER: JOHN WAYNE: AMERICA, WHY I LOVE HER It was during the dark days of Watergate and the final, unsettling days of the Vietnam War, when actor John Wayne decided to speak out. In "America, Why I Love Her," John Wayne explained in a special recording why America - and Americans - are special and why this country must remain great. Soon after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the family of John Wayne decided to re-release this moving testimony by their father. More than 25 years after his death, John Wayne remains one of Hollywood's most popular icons ever and an enduring symbol of America. Actress Maureen O'Hara once said that no other description for John Wayne is necessary than this: "American." As you listen to the heart-warming words of this album, you will feel the pride and love that unites each and every American. John Wayne's "America, Why I Love Her" is a must-have for all patriotic Americans, film buffs, collectors and poetry fans. It makes a wonderful gift and a great lesson for younger Americans. The CD is digitally re-mastered in surround stereo. Read on...(more). THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA November 22, 2006 post PATRIOT PERSPECTIVE: RECOUNTING OUR MANIFOLD BLESSINGS What is the nature of gratitude, of true thankfulness? Acknowledgment of receiving a gift that is undeserved, then joy appropriately suffusing that knowledge, overflowing into recognition of indebtedness to the giver. In truth, we are not really giving thanks-we give nothing-we are only responding with properly grateful hearts that are due the Gift Giver. That is the spirit in which Thanksgiving was first celebrated on our shores-and then persisted as a joining thread of our nation's character. The Pilgrims set us on the path to become a country humbly acknowledging the thanks we owe to Almighty God as Creator of life and Author of liberty. Read on...(more). THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA June, 2006 post BOYS OF THE BRONX (NEW YORK) - THE BOOK "THE HOLLAND AVENUE BOYS - A SUCCESS STORY" This is a different kind of success story. Success is not always about wealth or fame. For most, success is achieved through personal growth, satisfying careers, comfortable lifestyles and rewarding relationships. This is a story for people of all ages to provide: something positive and uplifting; inspiration, not by famous movie, TV or sports stars, but by ordinary people; examples of the significance in ordinary lives so people can feel better about their own lives; youngsters with direction, motivation and experiences that illustrate how people order their lives and how parents can have more of an impact on the lives of their children; an understanding of what values, traits and thought processes are essential to the development of successful lives. The one dollar bill you are looking at first came off the presses in 1957 in its present design. This so-called "paper money" is in fact a cotton and linen blend, with minute red and blue silk fibers running through, and it is actually cloth. We've all washed it without it falling apart. A special blend of ink is used; the contents we will never know. It is overprinted with symbols and then it is starched to make it water resistant and pressed to give it that nice crisp look.
